PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Share this project:

Sometimes it's fun to just push some buttons and toggle some switches.

"The Device" is a work in progress that started out as an experiment in making an entertaining interface with a bit of suggested backstory. My long term plan is to create additional devices, each with achievements to puzzle out. Feedback is welcomed.

VERSION 1.4

Last Updated: April 24, 2016

The World Map device now has seven achievements available. A number of the sounds have also been added and/or updated. Other updates were of the ever-popular behind-the-scenes variety.

Cool!

You should make this more like "please don't touch anything"

May 18, 2016

I really, really, REALLY love this for some reason and I definitely think you should continue. Maybe with a slowly unraveling story. Also, because this game can be slow, maybe add little hints so people aren't just pressing randomly and getting bored and giving up (unless you already have hidden hints and I'm just oblivious).

May 18, 2016

Also, I noticed the Almost Bedtime Studies thing. I recognize the name from Gamepress but I can't remember what games you made.

May 19, 2016

I'm glad you enjoy the game. I do want to do more with it; I think it is going to be a slowly evolving project that I get back to now and again. (The only hints thus far are in the names of the To Do list items.)

The two games I had on GamePress were Hench (which was designed for one of the GamePress contests) and Boil Boil.

I really don't understand any of it. Are you supposed to keep hitting random levers and buttons? Great graphics but is there a storyline or something? So confused...

April 21, 2016

It's pretty much just an interface that allows you to hit random levers and buttons, though you can take a shot at completing the "To Do" list activities if you wish.

April 29, 2016

I feel dumb, but are you supposed to hit random buttons and levers? Is there a secret to be uncovering? A reason for doing all this? I spent way too much time on trying to figure it out.

April 30, 2016

When it comes to the achievements, only one is triggered by a random set of actions. The others are all based on specific steps, some of which are very unlikely to occur randomly. Once you've accomplished everything on the To Do lists then randomly hitting buttons and levers is pretty much it. :)

Faileas yesterday it opened the game but now I tried to open it but it won't open. Anyways I love your game because I love to push buttons and flick levers and all that stuff :3

April 17, 2016

Can you please tell me a bit more about what happened? Does it not open at all or did it make it through the title screen before stopping? Thanks.

April 18, 2016

It wouldn't open at all cause I press play and it just stays on the hyper pad screen.

April 21, 2016

I'm afraid I don't know what is causing that but I'm working on a small update for this weekend. Hopefully the revision will fix the issue...

April 16, 2016

Developers, you guys should post this on the App Store

April 17, 2016

Thank you for the vote of confidence! :) Perhaps in time I'll look at putting it there.

April 17, 2016

Your welcome

April 15, 2016

Is the loading bar real, or just something like timer every 0 seconds add to health bar? Also game doesn't start 😕

April 16, 2016

The loading bar was a timer-based health bar. It has been removed for the time being but the game should work now.

April 15, 2016

In 1.2 the screen goes back after loading.

April 15, 2016

The screen goes black

April 15, 2016

Thank you for letting me know. I'll try to figure out what is going on.

April 10, 2016

Is this game finished or is there going to be updates. Just curious

April 10, 2016

This component is nearing completion but my hope is that it will ultimately be just one of several device interfaces in the game.

April 10, 2016

I see. Can't wait

April 09, 2016

Really interesting... I couldn't get the undiscovered country one, and there wasn't really an obvious pattern in what the buttons did. I got the other three though (rainbow wasn't too hard), and a lot of the time pressing the start button again gave a different result, is this intentional? The graphics look really good, but I got bored after I got all except undiscovered country.

April 10, 2016

A few of the button patterns give specific results; many initiate a random effect. I plan to increase the number of patterns that give a consistent result but don't have too many more planned. As for the undiscovered country, you have to look beyond the switches.

April 09, 2016

What did you make the graphics on?

April 09, 2016

I ended up using a variety of programs: * The device itself I built and textured using Hexagon 2.5 and rendered in DAZ Studio. * I generated the primary metal texture using Filter Forge 4. * The "on" glow of the lights, the labels, the drawings on the sticky notes, and the image on the small panel were created and added in Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.

In an unrelated note, for the sounds I've been using the downloadable ones in hyperPad but will be changing a few of them and adding others. I generally use Audacity for any recording or tweaking and Freesound.org for resources. If you have any other questions about my processes, please feel free to ask.

April 09, 2016

Found this really fun for some reason! Happy to see you back Faileas! I was quite a fan on Gamepress!

I suggest making some sort of storyline and guiding the user a bit more. There's really not TOO much to do here, and the user just gets frustrated and leaves after a few minutes lol.

But I know that this will be amazing! Can't wait to see the next update!

April 09, 2016

Thanks for the feedback! I'm excited about having time to play with the app again. I'd been thinking of possibly having a storyline to tie the devices together but haven't come up with one I really like enough just yet.

April 09, 2016

Ok great! Look forward to seeing it!

April 09, 2016

Those toggle switches were so satisfying :). Very cool device... Reminds me of something from the show Lost.

April 09, 2016

Thanks! The design was actually inspired by a device I saw online a while back when rummaging for images of switches and what. Someone with far more skill than I with metal and electronics created the thing for their kid. Sheer envy drove me to ponder how I could create something similar...

April 08, 2016

I don't know why but for some reason I reall found this fun. Great game keep up the great work

April 09, 2016

Thanks. It's good to know it's not just me who is enjoying it!
