The object that you want to snap to the grid has a drag and drop behavior. While touching the object, loop for each tile in the grid, check if that tile is empty, then calculate the distance between the object and that tile. If the distance is less than half the tile width then move a “highlight” tile to the position of the the current tile in the loop, and then once you’ve stopped touching the object, move it to the position of the highlighted tile.

dude, you could actually submit this to the game jam! it fits the theme and you could use the clover leaf as the jackpot…
hmm.. this could involve randomly spawning strips of pictures then have them move down behind the slots
